Industry Statistics

Industry Overview:

The average Queensland turf farm has approximately 16 hectares (ha).
The average Queensland turf farm would employee 2 people full time plus casuals.
On average a Queensland turf farm would undertake a minimum of 1.5 harvests (cuts) per annum.
Farm gate value is based on a conservative market price in Queensland of $3.00 per square metre. The price for some turf types will vary considerably and are therefore much higher in value.
Approximately 25% of all Queensland suppliers listed in the Australian Yellow Pages and Australia Online Index, do not produce turf, they are only traders.
One hectare of turf = 10,000 square metres (m²).

Estimated "Farm Gate" Value of Turfgrass Industry in Australia.
The following calculation was undertaken to estimate the total Farm Gate value of the Turfgrass Industry in Australia and Queensland based on a conservative average per square metre rate of $3.00 (some turf species priced much higher).

Total Estimated "AUSTRALIAN" Turf Production Capacity (Farm Gate Value)
Total farm area 7,062 ha x 10,000 m² / ha = 70,620,000 m².
An estimated 70 million m² x $3.00 per/ m² = $210 million in Australia.
Assuming 1.5 Cuts/annum = $210 million +50% = $315 million in Australia.

Total Estimated "QUEENSLAND" Turf Production Capacity (Farm Gate Value).
Total farm area 2.520 ha x 10,000 m² / ha = 25,200,000 m².
An estimated 25 million m² x $3.00 per/ m² = $75 million in Queensland.
Assuming 1.5 Cuts/annum = $75 million +50% = $112.5 million in Queensland.
